OPTIMIZATION CANNOT BE DONE IN ISOLATION
OPTIMIZATION MEANS OPTIMIZING YOUR SITE WITH COMPARISON TO ANOTHER SITE(S)
This ANOTHER SITE can be your competitor’s site or the top ranking sites for specific keywords. Because your goal is to beat the top ranking site and take its position on that keyword, so you have to be better than the best to reach the destination. You have to optimize your website better then the optimization done on the competitor website.
Optimize the wrong keywords and you will never get there !
Do not start off by optimizing for the most generic and highly searched keyword.
Identify the second and third level keywords which are not so generic but have good number of searches on the engines.
Analyze these keywords on the major search engines and study the top sites appearing on these searches.
If for any keyword searched, the top ranking site is not a home page of the site but any internal page of the site, it is good news because you can optimize your home page for that keyword and get more prominence on the engine.
View the source code of the top ranking page and check the on-page optimization done on that page. What kind of on-page optimization has given the page first position on that search term.
Check the following in the source code:
Has the keyword been used in the Title Tag
Has the keyword been used in the H1 Tag
Has the keyword been Bolded, Italicized or Underlined anywhere in the main text of the page
Whether the keyword has been used in the ALT Tags
Where the keyword has been placed in the start of the page and in the end of the page text matter.
Try to achieve respectable positions on the search engines for the 2nd and 3rd level keywords. Once you are there, it will not be difficult to rank top on the highly search keyword relevant to your website. SEO is a step by step success ladder, climb one step at a time and master it well so that you dont need to do the basic stuff all over again.
