Meta Tags – Why and How
Getting listed on search engines is not easy. Getting higher rankings without proper meta tags is impossible. Meta tags are not magical, they will not make your site number one but will definitely help you to gain more weightage over the websites with weaker meta tag placements.
Most of the search engines ask you to submit only the url of your site instead of submitting each and every page for indexing. Every search engine has a different way of indexing pages however most of the search engines use spiders to crawl your website. The spider, while crawling your website, looks at the meta tags for more information on your site to begin with.
Meta tags are very important for your site. If you do not have proper meta tags on your site, the spider will move to the next page and this can result in loose information of your website on the search listing. This will also result in giving you a very low ranking on the search results for specific keywords.
Meta tags are an important and integral part of the search engine optimization process. You are intelligently guiding the spider as to how your site should be treated by the search engine indexing algorithms.
Lets look at some basic meta tags and their uses.
<meta name=”TITLE” content=”This will appear on the top of the browser page”>
This will also be the title of your search result on the search engines. In my earlier post I have shown the ways to create a winning title. Please refer to “Search Engine Optimization Tips”
<meta name=”DESCRIPTION” content=”Explain more about your site here. You can write approx 800 to 1000 characters and also can use your prominent keywords to make this description more powerful”>
For more information on how to write a description which suits the purpose of your website, refer to my earlier articles on Search Engine Optimization.
<meta name=”KEYWORDS” content=”List all your keywords here. Do not spam by repeating the same keyword several times. You can seperate the keywords by a comma”>
Each webpage has a different purpose for your website and hence each webpage should have keywords matching the purpose of the page. Include combinations of keywords and key phrases which describe your product or service. Put yourself in the customer’s shoes and think while deciding on keywords. This is an important and integral part of your search engine optimization process. Refer to my earlier article for more details on keywords.
Other meta tags
<meta name=”AUTHOR” content=”put your name or the name of your company/website as the author for the content on the website”>
<meta http-equiv=”CONTENT-LANGUAGE” content=”EN”>. This meta tag is used by the crawler to ascertain the language of your content. This is useful for indexing your website for language specific search engines and regions.
<meta name=”OWNER” content=”you can put your name or email address here”>
<meta name=”RATING” content=”SHOPPING”> This meta tag is used to notify the category of your site. For e.g. Shopping, Adult, Educational, Government etc.
There are a few meta tags which are very important for your search engine optimization process. Every website owner is not expected to be very good at website design or html tagging, but with a little bit of practice and training you can achieve this.
Alternatively you can also outsource your search engine optimization work to specialist individuals or agencies who will give you value for money and drive unlimited traffic to your website.
Do keep in mind that however good your website looks (design and color wise), it is of no use to you unless you can drive traffic to the site. Also no matter how much traffic you drive to your site, unless you have excellent conversion strategies on the site you will not gain from your efforts.
