What is Blogging?

A series of writings or articles or entries organized in a decending order posted on the Web in the form of a Log – This seems to be the simplest meaning of Blogs.  It started with a simple method of exchanging ideas and knowledge by way of discussion forums and in the recent years it has exprienced a paradigm shift and a significant evolution.

It has become technologically advanced and now blogs and content are connected to each other and keep feeding to each other.  This has put the old SEO techniques at stake as search engines have changed the way they rank websites or content.  With more and more people communiating on the Internet via blogs, SEO will almost be extinct and the new way of optimizing content is emerging.  This is known as Social Media Optimization.  Your success is determined by how you optimize your content so that the social media sites can find and promote your content.

SMO or Social Media Optimization is conceptualized by Rohit Bhargava in his “5 Rules of Social Media Optimization” wherein he states as follows:

“The concept behind SMO is simple: implement changes to optimize a site so that it is more easily linked to, more highly visible in social media searches or custom searches engines (such as Technorati), and more frequently included in relevant posts on blogs, podcasts and vlogs”

The process is simple and effective.  Write fresh and unique content (duplicate content will get you nowhere), have a good linking strategy and tag it to social media sites which will drive target traffic to your content.

Though it seems to be simple, it has to be done effectively.  There are many sources on the Internet where you can learn how to blog.  Subscribe to few such resources and get going.  I will post some more details about identifying metrics for your blogs so that you can measure what you want to achieve from your blog.

Till then, keep spreading the word around.

Thanks for your introduction to blogging, Vijay. What you write is clear and relatively simple for us who are novices in the world of SEOs, SMOs, tagging, linking, del.icio.us and more. Keep up the good work, we’ll be linking to Info Zone soon.

    PS. What’s a ping?

    Hi Martin
Ping is a a network service whereby one can verify if a particular host server is accessible or not. For blogs, ping is a service whereby the blog aggregator sites check for new content on the blog on a regular interval, or they leave a trace behind so that whenever the blog is updated, the ping is sent to the aggregator service. It is like playing ping-pong 😉
