Website Linking Strategy – Off Page Optimization
December 28, 2006 at 1:39 pm 4 comments
In my earlier posts we have seen how we can do On-Page Optimization of webpages. Now let us look at the other side of the coin OffPage Optimization.
With offpage optimization done intelligently, you can ensure quick and high rankings on major search engines. Off page optimization really makes a big difference to your site’s ranking.
Off Page Optimization consists of various types of external factors i.e.
- Which websites link to your site
- How many websites link to your site
- The page rank on Google of the websites linking to you
- Are these site rated as authority websites by Google
- The title and description of their pages
- The anchor text used to link to your site
- The amount of incoming links to the site linking to your site
- How many outbound links does that site have
And many such aspects…
As I have mentioned earlier that optimization is always as compared to something. You can optimize your website compared to another website. If your optimization is better compared to another website, you will gain top ranking compared to the otherwebsite. Do keep in mind this compared to theme always.
So lets start the offpage optimization now. Follow these simple steps and you will be there….
Identify a keyword which is most relevant to your website.
Search for this keyword on the major search engines and make a list of top 10 ranked websites for that keyword.
To begin with, the immediate goal is to copy or replicate the linking strategy adopted by these top ranking websites. Once you have done that, a slight better effort will give you the cutting edge to win over the position from your competitor website for that keyword.
Create a spreadsheet with the following details captured in columns for the top ranking websites on the keyword identified by you.
- Page Rank of the website
- Inbound linking websites to that site
- Anchor text used to link to that website
- Page Title of that website
- Link Popularity (Many online tools can help you obtain this)
- Number of Inbound and Outbound Links
Create seperate worksheet for each top ranking website. You can do this for multiple keywords also.
How to identify the linking websites to your target website?
Enter the search term Link: in Google Search and you will get a list of websites linking to that specific website/webpage which has top ranking on google for that keyword.
Firing the same query in Yahoo will give you more results of linked sites as compare to Google as it has cut down on the number of back links displayed.
You can count the number of results derived and that is the Link Popularity of that website. Alternatively, you can go to and find our the Link Popularity of linking websites.
Once you have all the data handy, start analyzing the results and identify the website which should link to your website.
Check how many websites have used the specific keyword in the title of their page
Check how many websites have used the specific keyword in the anchor text to link to the website
Sort such websites according to their page rank on Google.
Prepare a blueprint of your linking strategy involving all the shortlisted
Now the actual hard work starts…..
Contact each of these websites and check if they can add your link to their website. This can be done as a link exchange arrangement with these websites. Provide them with the anchor text and other details to link to your website.
This seems to be a time taking activity but trust me it is very useful for any website. Do this religiously and you will soon see your listing on top positions on search engines.
I would post some more details on other off-page optimization techniques in the coming days. Till then keep working on your website and do contact me if you need any more help.
Cheers !

One way linking, two way linking and 3 way linking methods are used by most webmasters for getting valuable quality links. Off page optimization techniques help in getting traffic from other websites plus traffic from search engines.
